Lovely, Well Made, Modest Refrigerator

Despite my ever more diligent search, I began to conclude that refrigerator design had so changed in the 40 years of my ownership of my much-loved refrigerator that, now that it, sadly, no longer repairable, had to be replaced, I would never find one to fit in the space within the cabinetry that it occupied. Facing the near certainty of having to saw up my kitchen cabinets to accommodate any new refrigerator at all, I learned by a casual comment from an appliance salesperson at Home Depot that Oh, We have many, many refrigerators on our website. And, even better, the information is very, very searchable, allowing filters for dimensions, brand, finish, features, color, capacity, price, etc. I have much praise to offer Home Depot's website from this experience. This Frigidaire refrigerator is just right for my needs. Modest in its features compared to the new behemoths now apparently dominating the market, I find it to be well designed, user friendly, and made of well-chosen materials. While it rumbles and echoes motor-noises when empty, as any refrigerator does, it runs quietly when stocked with food. The installation instructions and the owners' manual are very helpful and very informative. Unlike some users' manuals, this one one feels like keeping on hand for its useful information. Not much ridiculous stuff like Do not try to eat the refrigerator door; Do not immerse the refrigerator in the bathtub when it is plugged into the wall. I enjoy the interior layout of shelves and cubbyholes. The interior lighting is very good. Controls are evident and clear to set and check. The freezer is surprisingly spacious and yet easy to keep organized. Of course, space is limited in this admittedly small machine, and one needs to learn how to use it, tailoring the volume of groceries one brings home on each shopping trip, but I believe that, with time, one adjusts to that with habits that become subconscious. One benefit may be that one buys a little less at a time and, in my case, finds less spoilage of unused food as a result.I am impressed with the exterior cladding, its color, its finish and its texture. It is quiet yet rich looking, and wipes clean very well. Some textured refrigerator doors are difficult to clean, leaving dirt in the crevices of the design of the texture, but this one, splendidly, does not. I am impressed that Frigidaire makes an ice-maker for this refrigerator, a separate purchase, which one can contemplate buying after seeing how life goes with the machine. I like having that accessory available. I have plans someday to reorganize the floor plan a bit in the kitchen of my beautiful 75-year-old, hand-crafted house to provide more countertop space and a new nook for a stovetop. At that time there might be space for a larger, more fashionable refrigerator, and at that time this little beauty will join a freezer in my basement for storage of, say, beverages or important items nevertheless not needed on a daily basis. While shopping for this refrigerator on the Internet, I read many customer reviews of this and other appliances. We know that such reviews are often unfair and ill-considered, and must be read understanding their vast variability and prejudice. While I find I agree with a few of the critical remarks people have made about this machine, I know that a refrigerator is not magic and it is wrong to expect it to be. Some reviewers unfairly call this refrigerator junk and trash and useless. Quite fair, in my judgment, however, are two reviewers' comments: that the covered vegetable drawers seem very low to the ground at first, until one just gets used to them, though I don't know how that can be changed --where else would we put them? -- and that the shelves in the door designed to receive milk cartons and pitchers and such somehow don't receive whole numbers of cartons, and the rest of that shelf is designed not quite deep enough or tall enough to receive more. But, one learns what fits where, and makes the best of it all. These shortcomings, if they even are, are very minor, I believe. Learn what items fit where in this lovely small refrigerator, and enjoy it!
